Lucas and Cummins mitochondrial (mtDNA) | T1a1

A new post on our series in Genetic Genealogy.  Here we will explore my own mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA for short.  mtDNA is inherited by your mother, her mother, grandmother, great grandmother and onwards as depicted in the picture below.  A really good reference can be found at wikipedia. T1a1 is a subclade of T and reportedly of Viking descent.

Origins

Mitochondrial (mtDNA) Haplogroup T derives from the haplogroup J'T that also gave rise to haplogroup J(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_T_(mtDNA))

Haplogroup: T1, a subgroup of T
Age: 22,000 years
Region: Europe, Near East, Northern Africa
Populations: British, Palestinians, Turks, Syrians
Highlight: The Vikings may have introduced haplogroup T1 to Britain.; Farmers

Haplogroup T originated about 45,000 years ago in the Near East, as modern humans first expanded out of eastern Africa. Its present-day geographic distribution is strongly influenced by multiple migrations out of the Near East into Europe, India and eastern Africa after about 15,000 years ago. Haplogroup T1 was associated with the introduction of farming to Europe.

Connection

What that means is all children born of my mother are T1a1, all children born of my maternal grandmother are T1a1 and we keep going back along those lines.  When searching for genetic connections this is a great clue.  From the following chart we can see all children of the following women, both male and females will be T1a1, this actually gives us a lot of scope, especially as we are at the end of the line with Mary Andrew who had an illegitimate daughter Mary Andrew.

T1a1 Pedigree

Rhonda (nee Lucas)
|- Peggy Lucas (nee Cummins)
|-- Cecilia Bamkin formerly Cummins (nee Miller)
|--- Emily May Miller (nee Davis)
|---- Zenobia Davis (nee Mundy)
|----- Jane Mundy (nee Prisk)
|------ Mary Prisk (nee Andrew)
|------- Mary Andrew

Here is a descendant chart for Mary Andrew, with all descendants bolded that will carry the mitochondrial DNA haplogroup T1a1.  Each MALE marriage will bring a change of mtDNA to the new wife's for their offspring.  Remember it comes from the female.  An * asterisk following the name is Rhonda's direct lineage.

Here is a map depicting the migration of the mitochondrial haplogroups (source: www.mitosearch.org)

Distribution

Haplogroup T is found in approximately 10% of native Europeans.
Haplogroup T is currently found with high concentrations around the eastern Baltic Sea.
The geographic distribution within subclade T2 varies greatly with the ratio of subhaplogroup T2e to T2b reported to vary 40-fold across examined populations from a low in Britain and Ireland, to a high in Saudi Arabia (Bedford 2012). Within subhaplogroup T2e, a very rare motif is identified among Sephardic Jews of Turkey and Bulgaria and suspected conversos from the New World (Bedford 2012). Found in Svan population from Caucasus(Georgia) T* 10,4% and T1 4,2% (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_T_(mtDNA))

Tree

This phylogenetic tree of haplogroup I subclades is based on the paper (van Oven 2008) and subsequent published research (Behar 2012b). For brevity, only the first three levels of subclades (branches) are shown.  The highlighted group is ours. (source: /wiki/Haplogroup_T_(mtDNA))
