Now, do I call this one Hodges, Bray or Leahy?
That is the big question!
Here is some background and hopefully, if you are connected to this branch you can help fill in some blanks.
Louisa Bray, the daughter of John & Maria BRAY was christened 4 August 1861 at St Blazey, Cornwall. I had narrowed down their arrival to between 1861 and 1877, Louisa's death certificate states she had been in the colonies for 72 years which makes her about 4 when she arrived. I believe William, Maria and Louisa arrived at Port Adelaide, Australia on 1st May 1865 onboard the Clara.
From Louisa's marriage to John HODGES in 1878 at Wilcannia, NSW we know that her father 'William John BRAY' was deceased and that her step-father Henry POCKRANDT gave his permission for her to be married, her mother's name was not listed. Henry Pockrandt and a Mary Kirby were the witnesses.
Since writing this I have received a birth certificate of a Clarence Ernest Henry Pockrandt which shows that Henry POCKRANDT & Hannah ROWE were married 24 Aug 1875 at Wallaroo, SA, although no marriage has been found to date.
There are 11 children born to Louisa Hodges, 4 of them with the father as John HODGES and 7 without a father listed. These 7 were the children of Cornelius LEAHY, even though they were registered as HODGES. Cornelius and Louisa did finally marry in 1919 presumably following the death of John HODGES. At this marriage she stated her parents as John BRAY (dec) and Anna Maria ROWE. It is interesting to note that Elizabeth Jane ROWE had her son William Bray ROWE baptised at the same time that Louisa was at St Blazey, Cornwall in 1861.
At the birth of my great grandmother Beatrice to Louisa, Mrs Hannah Pockerandt was listed as the witness.
Now to add another blank is the father of my grandmother Lily May, we have a name which cannot be proven. In Beatrice's later years she lived with John 'Jack' Ryan until his death, as far as I am aware they never married although her death was registered under RYAN.
